Our school mission aligns with with the IB mission:

We belong to our school family

Our students are part of our strong and international school community and actively engage in social learning, based on the values of the International Baccalaureate. Our students and teachers come from all over the world and learn with and from each other.

Like in a family, every member of the school community (parents/guardians, students, teachers and non-teaching staff) contributes to the success of our school according to their own abilities, experiences and talents. Our school life reflects open communication based on mutual understanding and respect.

We engage globally

International-mindedness means we seek a wider perspective. We develop international-mindedness in every single lesson and in each extracurricular activity. Through age-appropriate activities, students learn how their actions in local contexts will lead to global impacts. We are active members of the IB World community and collaborate with partner schools all over the world.

We grow for the future

All members of our school community are lifelong learners, grow for the future and become balanced, responsible and reflective learners as well as critical thinkers. We accompany our students on their life journey and during the transition to university with career counselling.

We support our students to develop the following attributes of the IB Learner Profile during their time at HPC International School

Inquirer

Our students become researching learners who ask meaningful questions and find answers through effective and scientific research methods and the use of multimedia tools and sources. In doing so, they use, among other things, the school library, the science laboratories of our school and off-campus learning facilities such as the city library.

Knowledgeable

A wide range of subjects in combination with the core subjects (Personal Project, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Service Learning) offers our students the best possible preparation for university studies and lays the foundation for lifelong learning.

Thinker

Our students not only acquire a broad spectrum of knowledge from various disciplines, but are also supported in holistic educational and learning processes to link new knowledge with familiar knowledge, to question and apply it.

Communicator

Our students participate successfully in communication processes, are able to express their own ideas both orally and in writing, listen to each other and communicate in a targeted and appropriate manner.

Principled

Our students stand up for their views and beliefs, take responsibility for their actions and learning, and respectfully adhere to our Academic Integrity Policy.

Open-mindedness

Our students are open-minded people who appreciate the diversity at our school. Their aim is to learn from and with each other despite different countries of origin, mother tongues, cultural backgrounds, skills and world views.

Caring

Our students show interest in world affairs. They recognize the different needs within the school community and beyond and try to respond to them.

Risk-Taker

Our students have the courage to consider new ideas and take on challenges. We encourage our students to leave their comfort zone as often as possible and take steps in a new direction. This is supported by a safe and open learning environment where such ventures are possible.

Balanced

Our students strive for a healthy lifestyle. The IB Diploma Programme is challenging and we actively support our students in finding a balance between exertion and relaxation.

Reflective

Our students recognize their strengths and weaknesses, reflect on their successes and mistakes and always work to develop themselves further.

Team

Our teachers

Our staff is as international as the student body. Currently, we have teachers from five continents: from Australia, US, UK, Germany, Ghana, Albania, India, Taiwan and Syria. The educational standard of our teachers is above average, they participate in IB professional development on a regular basis and their engagement is outstanding.

Teacher trainees and interns

Our school is a learning hub not only for students, but also for teacher trainees and interns, who join us from all over the world.

They get the chance to see the life of an international school and at the same time support us in our daily work.

How teachers talk about being members of the HPC International School family

My name is Ervin Dauti and I am originally from the seaside city of Vlora, Albania. This is my 9th year teaching IB and I am both a teacher and an artist!

I joined the team of HPC International School last academic year, being the Middle Years Program coordinator and teaching Design, Visual Arts, Personal Project. Coming to HPC International School was a great pleasure. I love working with people of different backgrounds, ages, and cultural origins, and as a teacher, I value my students and appreciate their trust.

What I love about our school:

    • Curriculum - Our school implements a challenging curriculum that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. We provide quality education, a safe and caring environment.
    • Off-campus experiences - Students are given the opportunity to learn in a fun way. Many field trips and outdoor activities are organized that allow students hands-on experiences they could not have in the classroom.
    • Diversity - The staff and classes are diverse and from all backgrounds.
    • Community - The school serves the community. We communicate with parents clearly and frequently about important issues and ask for input before making decisions.
    • A positive and very creative atmosphere and the school family where teachers, students, parents and non teaching staff work and grow together!

    Alumni-Statements

My name is Veronika Rybak and I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to HPC International School, a place that has played a pivotal role in shaping my academic and personal journey. I owe a sincere thank you to Headmaster Elke Heinicke and the dedicated faculty members for not only providing a stellar education but also for their unwavering support during the most challenging times of my life. Their care and encouragement were instrumental in navigating through difficulties, and I am truly grateful for their kindness. One of the things that made my time at HPC International School truly special was the daily joy of coming to school and meeting my big new family. The IB program offered a challenging yet enriching experience, and the diverse and inclusive environment created a sense of belonging that I will always cherish.

Fast-forward to today, and I find myself immersed in the fascinating world of Data Science at KU Ingolstadt. On top of that, I got to dive into the world of online learning at the University of the People, where I geeked out on Computer Science. This mix of educational flavors really opened up my perspective and gave me a cool, all-round view of the academic scene. The foundation laid at HPC International School has undoubtedly been a cornerstone of my academic success, and I am proud to carry forward the lessons learned. HPC International School is a nurturing environment that fosters personal growth. It's a place where each day brings new learning opportunities and where supportive educators make a lasting impact.

Thank you, HPC International School, for being more than just a school to me. You have been a home, a guiding light, and a source of inspiration.

Veronika Rybak (graduated in May 2023 - studies Data Science at KU Ingolstadt)

As school ambassador this year, I have learned a great deal of things regarding leadership, community, and open-mindedness. Not only was I able to organize the huge Prom event twice with the ideas and help of other students and school ambassadors, where we were able to raise a large sum of money helping the Myanmar foundation. Seeing all that money go to an amazing cause is truly heartwarming. Furthermore, I believe that with all school ambassadors we were able to create a great, family-like community in our school. Moreover, I improved my leadership and communication skills, which I had to utilize during the whole process of planning this massive event where most of our students joined. I personally believe that I was always open and welcome to students and staff, helping where I can and providing everyone with a welcoming feeling in our beautiful school. I loved being able to inspire other students about their subject choices, or communicating with them about their future goals and supporting and motivating them to go beyond that. I am an outgoing and social person, I enjoy talking to all students and learning about the many amazing cultures we have at our school. Also, I improved my public speaking skills, by speaking to the students and also parents at events and inform them about our doings or ourselves. I actively participated in publicizing our school and promoting the great values we treasure, not only in our school community but also outside of it. I believe, us school ambassadors have done a great deal for our school and our community growing and supporting each other.
    Kind regards, Maddy

Madeleine Hanikel (graduated in May 2023 - studies Business Administration at International University of Monaco)

    Perspectives

    Transition PYP-MYP-DP

HPC International School offers a coherent school concept starting from the Primary Years Programme, continued in the Middle Years Programme and culminating in the Diploma Programme, which directly prepares for the admission to university. Elements of teaching and methodologies are coherent throughout the programmes, applied age-appropriately and connect all school years.

    Strengths of an IB education

IB is one of the most advanced, up-to-date and student-centered educational programmes in today’s world, which is taught in more than 5600 schools in 159 countries (January 2023).

    Source: „Facts and figures.“ Ibo.org, 05 Jan. 2023, www.ibo.org/about-the-ib/facts-and-figures/

The transition from one IB school to another can be organized smoothly worldwide if needed.

A modern education can no longer be solely content-based, because content is constantly becoming outdated, changed or must be understood in new contexts. Furthermore, artificial intelligence is starting to replace humans more and more. Therefore, IB programmes focus on the development of skills which help the students to become problem-solvers and lifelong learners.
In a nutshell: IB students learn how to learn.

While doing so, they develop skills independently from contents, which they will need urgently to succeed at university and in their future lives: Research Skills, Communication Skills, Collaboration Skills, Self-management Skills and Social Skills.

The IB Diploma is widely recognized at universities worldwide and top universities offer preferred conditions to IB students. Since September 2022 one of our alumni has been studying on a full scholarship at New York University.

    Recognition in Germany

Based on the decision of the Kultusministerium in Germany the IB Diploma is equivalent to the Abitur and qualifies students to apply to all German universities.

The subject choice at our school is such that the criteria for study in Germany are met.

    Important Info: Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK)

The official statement by the German Kultusministerkonferenz for students can be found here:

    German version

    English version

These regularities apply to students starting the IB Diploma Programme in September 2023 or later (from IB May 2025 examination session on).
For previous regularities, please visit the website of the German Kultusministerkonferenz directly.

    Career counselling

Starting from grade 9 we support our students to reflect on their strengths and talents and to develop their first plans for what to do after IB. We of course also support them in choosing what subjects they take in the IB Diploma Programme. In grades 11 and 12, the career counsellor offers special workshops in which students learn how to strengthen their application as well as when and where to compile the required documents. Our career counsellor is available to support them during all steps of their application processes, regarding the recognition of the IB Diploma in Germany and the legalization process of the IB Diploma in specific countries. International universities regularly visit our school and present their programmes to students and parents.

    Where do our students study?

Our alumni choose many different destinations and subjects. Here are the most popular countries:

    • Germany
    • Netherlands
    • UK
    • Hongkong
    • Austria
    • United States (USA)

Here two of our alumni talk about their experiences at university and how our IB programme has prepared them for studying

Johanna Seitz (Communication Studies in Salzburg):

“I had to submit my first seminar paper and I have to say ... I am extremely happy that I have already learned a lot about academic honesty because this made quoting super easy. I was also very happy I got the chance to choose “Film” during IB. I am glad that I did the IB Diploma because, in my opinion, it prepared me very well for university - especially in terms of citation and also in the field of film and media. The first weeks of the semester were just a lot more relaxed for me and I could concentrate on other important things.”

Philomena Vanessa Niebergall (Business Psychology in Heidelberg):

“The benefit of independent work during the IB is noticeable. While other students struggle to manage their time, motivate themselves to complete tasks without deadlines, and have difficulties knowing how to structure their studying, the IB prepared me incredibly well in those departments.“

    IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme at HPC International School is aimed at student 16 and older and lays the foundation for studying at the world's most renowned universities and colleges.

The IB® Diploma Programme has been recognised by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany as equivalent to the German Abitur. Successful completion of our selection of subjects covers all requirements for the recognition of the IB® DP at German universities.

In order to obtain the International Baccalaureate, students have to take six subjects, three of them at higher level (HL) and three at standard level (SL).

You can learn more about the basic ideas of the IB Diploma Programme here: https://vimeo.com/267608336

    The IB Diploma Core Subjects

The IB® DP consists of 3 core components, which enable the best possible preparation for studies and lifelong learning.

    • The Extended Essay
    • Theory of Knowledge
    • Creativity - Activity - Service

    Extended Essay (EE)
The planning and writing of the extended essay in a subject of their choice prepares students for writing academic papers and for academic work at the university.

Learn more about the Extended Essay.

    Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
In the TOK lessons and beyond, pupils learn how to ask and answer questions about knowledge and learning. This is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about critical thinking and the question: How do we know what we know?

Learn more about Theory of Knowledge.

    Creativity Activity Service (CAS)

    CAS consists of three elements:

Creativity: The focus is on creative thinking and finding new and artistic solutions.

Activity: Includes all forms of sporting activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Service: This emphasises the aspect of voluntary and unpaid work for and together with others. The students experience their actions as meaningful for others. They develop their ability to work in a team and test leadership skills.

A CAS project combines all these three elements. For example, a dance project could be developed that is practised with a primary school class and performed for older people in the neighbourhood. In their CAS project, pupils pursue their individual interests and bring their strengths to the project.

    Digital Concept

    Online application:
Our application process is completely digitalized using the platform of OpenApply.

For an online application, please visit our OpenApply platform.

    Turnitin
We use Turnitin as our plagiarism detection software and to ensure the authenticity of our students’ materials in all classes and for all assignments. Our goal is to develop our students’ understanding of the relevance of proper citing and referencing and what it means to be principled as well as to support the development of academic integrity in our programmes. Furthermore, we use the Turnitin Feedback Studio tutoring independent work and giving feedback in high quality.

    ManageBac
We use this learning platform for information, communication, data management, daily teaching and learning, homework, documentation, grade books and report cards, projects and clubs and the calendar function to support the time management. Parents can access the platform as well to directly follow their children’s learning progresses.

    BYOD
Our students bring their own laptops and/or tablets to school and use them both daily in lessons and at home. There are no special requirements for the devices. In special cases devices can be borrowed from school.

    Social Media
We use social media to report on our daily work at our school. Many of the posts are created directly by our students.

    You can follow us on:

    Projects

    Partner schools

We closely collaborate with IB schools from all over the world. Most closely we cooperate with a school in Taiwan, one in Prague (Czech Republic) and with the Mudita School for refugees from Myanmar in Mae Sot (Thailand).

With all those schools we exchange materials, we have combined online lessons on specific topics. Teachers exchange experiences and visit each other’s lessons to learn from each other.

    Myanmar project

The Myanmar project is close to the heart of all our students, teachers and parents. We support this school with many fundraising activities in which every single student gets involved. What's more, we have granted a scholarship to a student from this school who now attends our school here with us in Heidelberg.

    Clubs

There are many different clubs at HPC International School and there are more each year. Clubs may differ from year to year because it is of importance to us that these reflect the interests of the students, as they should ideally be initiated and led by students and merely supported by teachers. In our clubs students develop leadership qualities.

Here is the current list of our clubs:

    • Drama Club
    • Music Club
    • Model United Nations
    • School Ambassadors
    • Construction Club
    • Arts Club
    • Yearbook Club
    • Creativity Club
    • Library Club
    • Keep Moving Club

    Parent Work

Parents and guardians are part of our school family and can contribute to school life and the school’s development in many different ways:

    • Regular parent meet and greet evenings
    • Individual parent-teacher conferences twice a year
    • Monthly newsletter
    • Parent focus group
    • Parents and guardians are invited to information evenings where they take the role of learners themselves, work on projects, come to understand the school programme better and develop strategies how to best support their children in their development.
    • Parent support groupParents and guardians may contribute to every day school life – from baking a cake to offering a workshop

What our parents have to say about our school

“Our two daughters are studying in HPC International School, and we highly recommend this school. Teachers are engaged, enthusiastic and friendly. Staff is very helpful. The programme is very innovative and interesting. We feel that we made a great choice for the future of our kids.”
    Kasia I Lukasz Strojny

“The HPC International School is exceptional in every sense. Teaching is at a very high level and teachers care about each child. Our son improved so much in self-confidence, became curious and independent, and is also eager to learn. Administration is well organized and approachable at any time with any kind of questions. For us this is the best school our child attended!”
    Sanja Kesic

„Learning the importance of being life-long learners and showing students important skills beyond teaching the curriculum, which is relevant to working with businesses, with future employers or even when being self-employed, is a gift. Being able to give my children this chance in life made me choose the HPC International School.”
    Sabine Nielsen

"Our son enjoys going to school every day and is particularly happy about the close relationship with the teachers.  Teachers are motivated to challenge the students and to get the best out of them.  Our son just completed a Personal Project, whereby he had to physically build something practical.  This is not his strength, but he succeeded in the end through the teachers continuous support and guidance.  We also like the schools great potential for future growth".
    Mirjam Meidinger

“ Having lived 8 years in Asia, made it hard to return to Germany, and the German school system, so we were soo happy when the possibility came up to join the HPC International school.
Our son is more than happy in this school. The teacher are all very competent and motivated and are able to create an atmosphere of trust.
In PREP2 the personal project is a big part in which they learn how to transfer all learned into their own project. When we as parents thought he would not be able to complete his task, the teachers gave him confidence and in the end, he really realised his project, which was  building a Violine. What I learned is, that the size of a school isn’t the important part, it is the teachers and their engagement , the respectful way they treat the kids, is reflecting back to them.”
    Myriam Helms

    Lunch

Every student has the opportunity to eat a hot lunch Monday through Friday from the school cafeteria. The meals are delivered freshly prepared by our catering partner, come from regional cultivation and contain organic components. Food allergies or vegetarian diets can be catered for.

Full meals provide children with all the nutrients they need for optimal growth and development.

Students sign up for warm lunches when applying for school. Alternatively students may bring their own lunches and, on request, may warm up in the microwave under supervision.
